Chris Phillips ATC, CSCS
Founder and Owner
Chris is Founder and Owner of Compete Sports Performance & Rehab and sets the standard for Compete’s performance training and sports medicine programs. He is a recognized board certified Athletic Trainer (NATA) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) that possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience in the world of performance training and sports rehabilitation. Chris is also an Integrative Corrective Exercise Specialist, Certified Power Plate Trainer, certified Sports Safety Specialist, a member of the Medical Fitness Network and a preferred provider for US Figure Skating’s National Network of Sports Medicine.
With more than 20 years of experience in professional sports, Chris is the Athletic Trainer for Czech Figure Skating Team in 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. He has served as the Athletic Trainer for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League, The Los Angeles Sol of the Women’s Professional Soccer League, and has served as both the Head Athletic Trainer and Head Strength Coach for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League. More recently, Chris has supervised the sports medicine and performance training programs for the Orange County Blues of the Men’s USL Pro League and Anaheim Bolts of the Professional Indoor Soccer League. He has written for High School Illustrated Magazine, Cali Rubber Magazine, OC Parenting, and Men’s Journal.
While working in the NHL, Chris’s proudest moment was being a member of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finalist, Mighty Ducks. He was also selected as the Head Athletic Trainer for the 2002 Men’s USA Hockey National Team that competed in Sweden. Throughout his career, Chris has worked with elite athletes including Alex Ovechkin, Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, JS Giguere, Joy Fawcett, Marta, Shannon Boxx, and Mariah Bell.
Mike Hannegan MS, ATC, CSCS, PN1
Mike Hannegan comes to Compete following 10 years as an Athletic Trainer in the National Hockey League. An Orange County native, his resume includes over 19 years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in professional sports including over 1400 professional hockey games worked. Hannegan received his B.S. in Movement and Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology from Chapman University and went on to complete his Masters of Science degree in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength Coach’s Association, Level 1 Precision Nutrition Coach, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Jenna Janadi MS ATC
Jenna is a certified athletic trainer and graduate of Plymouth State University, where she received her Master’s in Athletic Training. She attended Cal State University, Fullerton for undergrad, where she got her Bachelor’s in Kinesiology. Her primary responsibilities at Compete include serving as the Athletic Trainer at Capistrano Valley Christian School, the Ontario Avalanche Junior Hockey Team and Socal Blues club soccer. Jenna also manages Athletic Training coverage of events.
Brandon Lambert
Brandon serves as a Strength & Conditioning Coach for Compete Sports Performance & Rehab. Brandon brings superior experience as both an athlete and coach to the staff. He was the Defensive Coordinator for the Tustin High School Varsity Football Team and currently coaches track and field.
As a three-sport stand-out at Tustin High School (football, basketball, and track), Brandon earned a football scholarship to Boise State University and spent one season at Boise State prior to transferring to Santa Ana College where he subsequently received another scholarship to play at San Jose State University. At Compete, Brandon works with both our private clients and teams and directs our Adult SportFlex Small Group Training.
Jorge Castellanos ATC
Jorge obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and a Master of Science in Athletic Training from Cal State Fullerton. While finishing his Masters, Jorge interned with USA Volleyball and with Northwood High School. He will primarily work at the Lake Forest facility and also be the Athletic Trainer for Compete client Cal United Strikers FC professional soccer team.
Elysia Tsai, M.Ed., ATC
Mitch Deyhle, MS, ATC
Mitch Deyhle is a certified and licensed athletic trainer with 10+ years of experience working in professional and collegiate sports. Prior to Compete, Mitch was the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine for Orange County Soccer Club, as well as the Head Athletic Trainer for the University of Dayton’s men’s soccer, baseball, and women’s rowing.
Mitch received his Master of Science in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton and his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Ashland University, where he was also an All-American nominee soccer player. He is certified as a Functional Movement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Performance Enhancement Specialist.
Austin Salerno, MS
Austin comes to Compete with a B.S. in Kinesiology from Azusa Pacific University and his M.S. in Kinesiology from Point Loma Nazarene University. He has a strong background in sports science and 5+ years of experience working in rehab, personal training, and sports performance coaching. He has experience managing a sports performance facility where he worked with youth, high school, and college-level athletes.
Tanner Smith
Tanner Smith first came to Compete as an intern in 2020 during his time as a student-athlete at Biola University. A recent graduate of Biola University where he received his Bachelors’s in Kinesiology. At Biola, he was a 4 year NCAA Div II swimmer where he broke multiple school records and helped lead the team to their first two conference championships in school history. Tanner has spent multiple years training athletes of all sports and levels. Ranging from swimmers to basketball players.
Ivan Avelar, MS, CSCS, RSCC
Ivan Avelar serves as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist for Compete Sports Performance & Rehab. Ivan brings over ten years of professional, collegiate, and high school human performance coaching experience serving as an Assistant Athletic Performance coach at California State University, Northridge and as a developer of Cal State LA’s first Strength and Conditioning program. He also worked with baseball, Men’s/Women’s volleyball, track and field, and women’s water polo at UCLA and in Florida at Webber International University. He previously worked with NHL, NFL, and Boxing off season training at Athletes Performance now known as Exos.
Ivan is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach, and is certified with USA Weightlifting. He received his Bachelor of Science from California State University, Fullerton in Kinesiology and his Master in Exercise Science and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine.
